Xfce is one of most stable and lightweight desktop environments for Linux. It has

  • Window Manager (xfwm4)
  • Panel (xfce4-panel)
  • Desktop (xfdesktop4)
  • Session management (xfce4-session)
  • Powerful file manager (thunar)
  • etc.

Someone may ask - why not LXDE? Because:

  • it has not generic monitors (Conky uses a lot of CPU time)
  • it crashes with some themes (for example with my favourite
  • it is less configurable
  • it is faster (even if XFCE uses a bit more resources - don't worry A10 is not Pentium 166MMX :-P)

If we have Xorg installed, it's time to get Xfce copy :)

sudo apt-get install xfwm4 xfce4-panel xfdesktop4 xfce4-session thunar xfce4-genmon-plugin

Maybe you will be scared when you see lots of dependencies. But don't worry - I am installing very minimal and lightweight version of XFCE4 (I told earlier - good desktop enviroment use some disk storage).

Also add user to video group:

sudo usermod -a -G video user_name

To test if XFCE works, type this command in terminal:

xinit startxfce4

You will see terminal window and dialog:

Welcome to the first start of the panel
Choose below which setup you want for the first startup

[Migrate old config] [Use default config] [Empty panel]

Click Use default config and wait a moment. If panels are loaded, you can look around your system.

To exit XFCE session, close Terminal window. We will set autorun of XFCE later.
